Laken Riley Act + Lawsuit Reform

After an unexpected week away from the Capitol due to winter weather across the state, it was great to be back under the Gold Dome this week doing the people’s work.

This legislative session is off to an incredible start, and I’m looking forward to working alongside each member of the House to champion strong, common-sense legislation that strengthens our state’s families, businesses, and communities.

From attending the signing of the Laken Riley Act in Washington D.C. to joining the Governor to announce strong measures that will move our state forward—it’s been an incredible week for Georgia and the entire nation.

Laken Riley Act Signed Into Law

On Wednesday, I was honored to join Congressman Mike Collins and members of the Georgia House as President Trump signed into law his first piece of legislation during his second term—the Laken Riley Act.

Women and girls throughout the nation are safer because of President Trump’s leadership to crack down on illegal immigration and secure our southern border. Last year, the Georgia House was proud to pass HB 1105 which laid the groundwork for the success of this administration’s deportation efforts, and we’ll continue to work alongside President Trump to make our communities and nation safe again.

Praying for D.C.

Our nation joins together to pray for the families and loved ones of the victims of the American Airlines accident in D.C. on Wednesday night, including fellow Georgian Sam Lilley who was the first officer on the flight.

State of the Judiciary

Earlier this week, we were joined in the House Chamber by the judges of our state’s judicial system to hear Chief Justice Michael P. Boggs deliver his third State of the Judiciary address.

The Chief Justice discussed our state’s initiatives to increase access to legal services and improve the administration of justice, as well as the importance of an independent judiciary in preserving the rule of law.

We’re grateful to the men and women throughout the state whose dedication to justice and the rule of law keep us safe and uphold our state’s constitution.

Frontline Policy Council

I had the opportunity to join Cole Muzio and the Frontline Policy Council team in Atlanta to discuss some of our legislative priorities for the upcoming session including protecting girls’ sports and championing Georgia families.

I am grateful for organizations like Frontline Policy across the state who partner with us to advance an agenda that prioritizes our children, families, and communities—creating a brighter future for every family in every corner of the state.

Governor Kemp’s Lawsuit Reform Announcement

Yesterday, I joined Governor Kemp as he announced a comprehensive lawsuit reform plan that is another step in the right direction to keep our state the best place to live, work, raise a family—and do business.

During the interim, I was glad to join Governor Kemp at his roundtable panel discussions across the state where we heard from Georgia’s businesses about the issues they’re facing—and one thing was abundantly clear—the cost of insurance is crippling many businesses who are already struggling to stay afloat.

We know that sensible, measured lawsuit reform is needed to return stability to our insurance market and balance to our courtrooms.

The House is looking forward to supporting Governor Kemp’s plan that will continue to balance the scales of justice and stabilize insurance rates—all while protecting the rights of Georgians with legitimate claims for damages and bringing our legal environment in line with our neighboring states.

Speaking with WSB-TV reporter Richard Elliot about Governor Kemp’s proposed lawsuit reform plan

As always, thank you to each of you for your continued support!

My best,
Speaker Jon Burns
