Welcoming New Colleagues

Friends,

The University of Georgia has much to celebrate these days with their SEC championship victory over LSU.  But for some at UGA, there wasn’t a chance to rest after that victory.

Over the last few days, the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia has been hosting the 33rd Biennial Institute for Georgia Legislators.  A regular occurrence for decades, this program is held shortly after the election every two years, and is geared toward teaching new members of the General Assembly the nuts and bolts of legislating, while updating all of us on topics that may come before the legislature.

After election day in November, the Republican Caucus welcomed 19 new members to the Georgia House of Representatives.

Representing all corners of Georgia, the men and women joining us include native Georgians and American immigrants, and represent communities across our state including St. Simons Island, northwest Georgia on the Tennessee state line, and the city of Atlanta.

Serving as a legislator is hard work.

And for all of my new colleagues - particularly those who have never served in elected office - there is much to learn. Topics covered have included the state budget, separation of powers, the legislative process, and potential issues facing Georgia ranging from transportation needs to cybersecurity.

Between new House and Senate members elected in November Georgia has 53 new legislators joining those of us who have returned for another term in Atlanta.

I am optimistic that just as I have the opportunity to continue to serve you in the 159th District, my new colleagues will take their roles seriously and put Georgia and their constituents above the type of petty political rhetoric that too often comes from Washington.

Georgia’s elected leaders have a history of minimizing party squabbles and putting the needs of the people of Georgia above partisan bickering.

I remain confident that our new members will continue that tradition, allowing us to continue to serve you.

Conclusion

Serving the people of the 159th District continues to be an honor.
