Protecting Georgia Values

Friends,

The General Assembly completed Legislative Day 24 last week. There are four more legislative days left to pass new legislation through one Chamber in order to be considered by the other Chamber. The legislation we passed over the past week addressed many areas of importance to the people of District 159.

Standing Up for Our Men and Women in Uniform

Men and women in uniform - both law enforcement and military - keep us safe at home and abroad, and deserve our thanks.  We passed several bills this week that show them the respect they deserve.

House Bill 1064 adds an income tax exemption for up to $35,000 for military retirees, recognizing the contributions our military men and women can make in the private sector with the skills they have developed after their retirement.

House Bill 1216 increases the minimum fine from $500 to $1000 and enhances the overall penalties for fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. The higher fines and penalties associated with this bill will discourage drivers from evading law enforcement, better protecting our police and public from dangerous motorists.

Taking Care of Our Children

Our children are the future of Georgia - but I will never be a better advocate for your children than you are.  That is why I supported several pieces of legislation this week that ensure that you - and not the government - are able to be the primary advocate for your family.

House Bill 1178, the Parents’ Bill of Rights, establishes that parents have the right to review curriculum and direct the moral and religious upbringing of their children. House Bill 1084, the Protect Students First Act, prevents the use of curriculum that espouse divisive concepts. The bill also requires each local board of education to adopt a complaint resolution policy to address complaints alleging violations of this new policy.

Looking Out for Our Farmers

Agriculture remains the largest sector of the economy in Georgia, employing over 40% of Georgians and contributing over $70 billion to the economy. House Bill 1150 reinforces safeguards that protect Georgia farms from nuisance lawsuits while respecting the property rights of their neighbors.

Battle of Brier Creek Anniversary

This past Saturday, I joined community members and the Sons and Daughters of the Revolutionary War to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Brier Creek, located in the Tuckahoe Wildlife Management Area in Screven County. Each year, we gather together at the burial site of nearly 150 of those who fell during this battle to remember their gallant fight for our freedom.
