Tropical Storm Debby Update

Tropical Storm Debby Update

This week, Tropical Storm Debby brought historic levels of rainfall, flooding, and tornadoes to areas across South-Central and Southeast Georgia. Many of these communities are still experiencing severe conditions and property damage in the aftermath of the storm.

State leaders and emergency management agencies have been on the ground since day one, working to mitigate the impact of Tropical Storm Debby and ensure these communities are able to receive federal disaster relief resources.

Governor Kemp declared a State of Emergency on August 3, 2024, and President Biden accepted the declaration on Tuesday. These actions will allow the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate disaster relief efforts where they are needed.

Lieutenant Governor Jones, Attorney General Chris Carr, and Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John King are actively coordinating relief resources.

The Georgia National Guard, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency, Department of Agriculture, Forestry Commission, Department of Natural Resources, and Department of Transportation are all working around the clock to gather reports of damage and develop a coordinated recovery plan.

I also want to recognize our utility providers, first responders, and local media stations whose quick response and dedication kept Georgians safe and informed throughout the week.

On Friday, I had the opportunity to join these leaders to assess the severity of storm damage across Southeast Georgia. We’re going to continue coordinating with state and federal officials to provide assistance to the families, businesses and communities that have been impacted.

I ask that you join Dayle and me in continuing to pray for the individuals and communities affected by Tropical Storm Debby—especially the family and loved ones of the 19-year-old young man who was killed in Moultrie when a tree fell into his home.
