Advancing Public Safety & Minority Engagement Efforts
We’ve had another busy and productive week attending bill signings, meeting with constituents across the state, and speaking to various organizations about the work we’re doing in the House.
Governor Kemp has been traveling the state signing into law some of the House’s top priorities from the 2024 Legislative Session. Over the last week, I was honored to join him as he signed legislation to bolster Georgia’s number one industry and increase public safety throughout the state.
On Tuesday, the Governor signed several agriculture bills into law, including SB 420. This legislation prohibits foreign adversaries from purchasing farmland in our state, protecting our vital resources and defending our national security. Governor Kemp also signed bills that reduce burdensome costs for our farmers and producers, increase penalties for livestock theft, and support Georgia’s rural communities. Our agriculture industry has a $74 billion economic impact on our state each year, and we’re proud of the work accomplished in the 2024 Legislative Session to support continued prosperity for Georgia’s top industry.
Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve watched as threats of violence and chaos have broken out on college campuses across the nation. Here in Georgia, however, those responsible for these displays of hatred and antisemitism were met with swift force and decisive action from the best in the country–our Georgia State Patrol. I was proud to join alongside Governor Kemp as he signed legislation to support our state’s law enforcement and promote public safety throughout Georgia.
Governor Kemp signed into law HB 1105 - “The Georgia Criminal Alien Track and Report Act of 2024” - that requires sheriffs to report illegal immigrants who are taken into custody and penalizes so-called sanctuary cities that refuse to comply with reporting laws. In addition, he signed another piece of House legislation that criminalizes “swatting” and further protects our citizens and law enforcement officers.
I’ve also had the opportunity to meet with members of several incredible groups and organizations across the state including the Georgia Historical Trustees for their annual GALA and the Laurel Hill Lutheran Church men’s group! I’m always grateful for the opportunity to meet with the great people of our state and partner with the organizations working hard to make Georgia the best place to live, work, and raise a family!
Mrs. Dayle and I were honored to attend the 20th-anniversary celebration of Springfield Elementary School in Effingham where she served as the first principal! As always, I’m incredibly proud of the work done in the House to expand educational opportunities for Georgia’s k-12 students and invest in the future leaders of our state.
It was also great to join our friends from the Florida House of Representatives down in Miami as we continue our work to safeguard and expand our majority ahead of November. We thank them for their continued partnership with us in championing the conservative agenda and expanding minority outreach—a vital undertaking for the continued success of our coalition in Georgia.
I hope everyone has a wonderful week. Thank you for your continued support of our efforts, and I look forward to hearing from you soon!
My Best,
Speaker Jon Burns
