Education + Critical Infrastructure Investments
Welcoming Dr. Russell Keen as President of Augusta University
On Wednesday, I had the honor of recognizing my good friend Dr. Russell T. Keen, and celebrating his new role as President of Augusta University and the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Keen has served our state within the University System of Georgia for over 22 years, and I’m looking forward to his continued leadership as he guides the strategic direction of Augusta University, the education of our students, and the future of our state.
Groundbreaking in Effingham
On Thursday morning, I joined community members from Effingham County for a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the new Effingham County School District Performing Arts Center and Jack Hill Convention Center. Our community is blessed with a school system that is dedicated to providing quality education to every student—both in and out of the classroom.
The late Senator Jack Hill’s son, Lance Hill, spoke of Jack’s love for Effingham County and Georgia’s entire 4th District. I know he would have been incredibly proud of these accomplishments for Effingham County and of the impact they will have on our citizens and community for years to come.
We also recognized the expansion of two critical career pathway programs at Savannah Technical College—nursing and commercial truck driving. As our state witnesses unprecedented growth, the need for healthcare professionals and logistics professionals has increased significantly. This expansion within our technical college system will provide an opportunity for countless Georgians to pursue careers in these high-demand fields and support our state’s ever-growing economy.
Thank you to Superintendent Dr. Yancy Ford, the members of the Effingham County School Board, Dr. Ryan Foley, Commissioner Greg Dozier, and every administrator, teacher, and staff member who works tirelessly to build a brighter future for every child who comes through our school system, for Effingham County, and for Georgia.
Infrastructure Investment
On Thursday, I joined Governor Kemp in recognizing the incredible work of the Georgia General Assembly and the Georgia Department of Transportation to invest $1.5 billion in our roads, bridges, and economic development centers in every corner of the state.
In the House, we’re committed to making strategic investments in our critical infrastructure that will keep our state and economy moving for years to come!
Celebrating the Life of Colonel Sid Miles
On Friday, we gathered to honor the life of former Department of Public Safety Commissioner Colonel Sid Miles. Colonel Miles dedicated himself to protecting his fellow Georgians and promoting the safety of citizens throughout the state. His contributions to our state, his dedication to public service, and his love for his family and those he served beside will not soon be forgotten. I ask that you keep Colonel Miles’ family and loved ones in your prayers as they mourn his loss.
I hope everyone has a great weekend, and I look forward to continuing our work in the House to make our state the best place in the nation to live, work, and raise a family!
My best,
Speaker Jon Burns
